Over 90 per cent of the fatality in road accidents is due to head injuries. If the head is protected, the chance of survival is high, even if the accident was a major one, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mahendra Patrudu. He was speaking at a function jointly organised by the Visakhapatnam Crime Reporters Association (VCRA) and the City Police Commissionerate, on road safety, here on Monday.

The police and VCRA also distributed helmets to over 70 crime reporters and photographers and videographers from various newspapers and electronic news channel organisations.

Distributing the helmets, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) C.M .Trivikram Varma said that every two-wheeler driver should wear a helmet.

“In medical science, almost every part can be replaced, but there is no technology for brain replacement,” added Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K. Prabhakar.

Accident cases

He also pointed out that in 2014, there were about 1,228 reported accident cases and of which 1,309 persons were injured and 321 were fatal cases.

T. Ravi Kumar Murthy, DCP (Crime), G. Ramgopal Naik, DCP (Zone II), Venkateswara Rao, DCP (Admin), other senior officers and officer-bearers of VCRA were present.
