Collector M. Karunakaran formally inaugurated the much-awaited sale of ‘Amma Cement’ at Maanur near here on Monday.
According to Dr. Karunakaran, consumers building houses will be issued 50 bags per 100 square feet, subject to a maximum of 750 bags for 1,500 square feet. The buyer will have to produce the approved building plan or a certificate from village panchayat officer, revenue inspector, panchayat union supervisor or road inspector concerned. For repairs or renovation, 10 to 100 bags will be sold.
The cement will also be available in shops run by the District Supply and Marketing Societies. A maximum of 400 bags will be stocked at the shops for sale at any given point of time. The sale of cement through these shops will be done through panchayat-level federations of designated women self-help groups. The amount payable towards the purchase of ‘Amma Cement’ can be made through demand draft drawn in favour of Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation Limited – Amma Cement Scheme and paid in the Indian Bank branches in the current account number 6276911017 (Anna Salai Branch, Chennai). Those who want to buy up to 100 bags of cement may pay the amount in this account and submit the countersigned chalan to the godown in-charge for registering the beneficiary’s name in the ‘seniority register’ and get acknowledgement from the godown in-charge.
In Tirunelveli district, ‘Amma Cement’ has been stocked in the godowns at Maanur, Melaneelithanallur, Kuruvikulam, Cheranmahadevi, Paapaakudi, Kadayam, Kalakkad, Radhapuram, Keezhapaavoor, Kadayanallur and Shencottai unions and also in the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godowns at Alangulam, Ambasamudram, Nanguneri, Palayamkottai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Valliyoor, Vasudevanallur and Sankarankovil and hence the consumers can get the construction material from these places.

The sale was launched at Kayathar. A bag of cement from this new venture was priced at Rs.190. Kadambur C. Raju, Kovilpatti MLA, inaugurated the sale of in the presence of Collector M. Ravikumar. The new initiative of the State government would certainly offset the rising cost of cement marketed by private dealers, the MLA said.
