Boat set sail 9 days ago

Fishworkers forum flays Coast Guard firing on fishing vessel

January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KOLLAM:

Secretary of the National Fishworkers Forum T. Peter has protested against the Coast Guard personnel opening fire at the fishermen who were returning to the Neendakara harbour after fishing.

He told The Hindu that the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation would take out a march to the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Mr. Peter said apart from foreign ships, vessels of Indian law enforcing agencies were also turning out to be a major threat for the fishermen. He said the firing had triggered tension in the Kerala waters. The fishing boat Rishika had set sail from the Neendakara harbour nine days ago for fishing. It was returning from the Kanyakumari area on Monday afternoon when Coast Guard officers approached the boat for identity card verification.

The boat had nine fishermen on board and the two injured were natives of Tamil Nadu. Owner of the boat J. George said the injured were admitted to the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
