Kurukshetra woman donates kidney for daughter-in-law

“This was a routine transplant operation, but the emotional bonding between the two women made it special. We were surprised to find a mother-in-law willing to donate a kidney to her daughter-in-law. The first reaction was that of disbelief,” said Dr Munish Chauhan, Senior Consultant in the Department of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant.

Sushma Devi said, “After three months of the marriage of my son, my daughter-in-law was diagnosed with kidney failure. For about two years, she remained on medication and dialysis. a few months back, after her condition deteriorated, I decided to donate my kidney and save her life.”

The donor is from a village in Kurukshetra where daughters-in-law are usually sent back to their parental home if they are found suffering from a severe disease.

“Many told me to send her back, but I refused. After all, she is also someone’s daughter. After organ donation, we both are leading a healthy life. People should not be scared of donating their organs,” said the mother-in-law.

Manisha Devi said, “My mother-in-law has given me a second lease of life.”
