We have been preparing for this election for a year: R P Singh

The day we fell short of a majority by a few seats, we started preparing.

R P Singh, BJP national secretary and former MLA from Rajinder Nagar, tells PRAGYA KAUSHIKA that most of the party’s candidates are finalised and ready for the battle.

Does the BJP leadership think 21 days would be enough for campaigning?
Our chief Satish Upadhyay has always maintained that the party is ready for elections every day. We have been preparing for a year now. The day we fell short of a majority by a few seats, we started preparing.

The AAP has already declared its candidates for all 70 seats. Congress has named a first list of 24. Do you believe there will be dissatisfaction and protest when you declare the tickets, now that it’s a bit late?
Candidates have never been a problem for us. Lack of them has been a worry for AAP, which poaches candidates, and Congress, which doesn’t have many. In BJP, consensus has already been built on majority of the seats. We have an organisational structure that takes care of problems like claimants working against party. We have finished that process three months back. The first list will be out soon.

Do you think your party will face factionalism?
There will be no factionalism.

But there are many prominent members of the state BJP who are projecting themselves as candidates via advertisement and hoardings.
They have every right to project themselves as candidates. Anyway, their hoardings promote the party symbol, which helps everyone.

Festive offer

How is the BJP planning to take on the AAP this time?
Had AAP been as strong as some people are projecting, they would be focusing on the elections rather than replying to our comments all the time. Modiji’s speech is keeping them busy, it seems.
