Valencia have rewarded coach Nuno Espirito Santo with a three-year contract extension which ties him to the Primera Division club until 2018.

Nuno, 40, replaced Juan Antonio Pizzi at the helm of Valencia last summer and his previous deal expired at the end of the season.

Valencia have enjoyed a solid campaign so far under the Portuguese and are fifth in the Spanish top flight.

A statement from Los Che read: "Valencia have reached an agreement with the coach of the first team Nuno Espirito Santo to extend his contract until June 30, 2018."

Nuno, the former Porto, Dynamo Moscow and Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper, could not hide his delight at extending his stay at the Mestalla and told the Spanish press on Monday: "I'm very happy.

"I am aware of the responsibility that we have. I feel pride and I'm honoured.

"I took no time to accept, it was a very easy decision. It's a pleasure to be here and I will be eternally grateful to this club.

"I never had doubts about my desire. We, the club and I, wanted continuity to improve the team."

Nuno, whose side recently ended Real Madrid's Spanish record 22-match winning streak, has led Valencia to 10 wins and just three defeats in 18 La Liga games.

They are also alive in the Copa del Rey and take on Espanyol in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday, where Los Che will defend a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at home.
