SURAT: With the arrest of one more person on Saturday, police have so far arrested nine accused, eight of whom are students of engineering in different colleges in south Gujarat, in connection with Gujarat Technological University (GTU) answer book leak scam.
Prime accused Jainish Mahyavanshi alias Patel, his brother Hemal and their close aide Yashpal Gohil are on the run ever since the scam was busted on December 30, 2014.

Montu alias Maulesh Patel, an Ankleshwar resident and student of SVNT in Bharuch, was arrested on Saturday. Maulesh had finalized a deal with Jainish for Rs 36,000 to give him the answer book to write his answers. Those arrested earlier were Vishal Patel, Karan Desai, Priyank Patel, Manish Chamoli, Stefan Patel, Mukund Kothwala, Krunal Sailor and Kartik Patel.
Police had nabbed Vishal and Karan from Ring Road and recovered from their possession an answer book that was of Karan. From the same location, they on December 30 had found nine more answer books and two mobile phones. The other arrests were made on the basis of the abandoned answer books recovered on Ring Road.
Police investigation revealed that Vishal, who holds a master degree in engineering, acted as an agent for Jainish and used to finalize deals with engineering students. Some of the arrested students had direct contact with Jainish. The arrested students happen to be residents of the city, Vyara in Tapi district, Vansada in Navsari district and Bharuch district.
Jainish and Hemal, contractual employees posted in the GTU strong room in Surat, have been involved in the murky affair for long, sources said. The duo used to bring the answer books out of the strong room set up at Girls Polytechnic, Athwagate for two hours in the night to allow students to write their answers. The answer books were identified by Jainish and Hemal from the specific signs made on their last page with a pencil. For each answer book, they used to charge approximately Rs 40,000 from the students. The answer books were kept back in the strong room after the students had written the answers. The duo used to ensure that the signs were deleted from the last page before the answer books were kept back in the strong room.
