SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Public Library Corporation (PPANS) is offering free library memberships beginning this month.

Its director Jamilah Katis said the move was in line with the call by Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan to enrich the people.

"The government places a lot of importance on creating a society which is knowledgeable and informed, and this move to exempt membership subscription will hopefully encourage a reading culture among the people of Negeri Sembilan. Previously, we imposed a membership fee of RM10 for adult members, RM5 for teenagers and RM3 for children," she told Bernama here today.

She said the decision was made at a meeting of the PPANS Board of Directors on Dec 12 last year, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Mat Ali Hassan who is also PPANS chairman.

"Mat Ali said the exemption of subscription for the library membership was PPANS' initiative towards encouraging more people in Negeri Sembilan to read. We want the people to be intelligent, broadminded, creative and critical," she said.

PPANS has 85 public libraries in Negeri Sembilan, including 25 fully-run by it and 60 village libraries jointly run with the National Library. – Bernama
