A youth from Dongri suffering from mephedrone addiction took a stand to ensure that no more youngsters like him fall prey to the deadly drug. He lodged a complaint with the police against the supplier after which the suspect was apprehended.

The suspect, identified as Asif Iqbal Shaikh, 26, is resident of Yusuf Manzil building in Pydhonie. He was on Sunday booked under section 328 of the Indian Penal Code for causing hurt by means of poison.

The complainant walked into the Dongri police station on Saturday night, stating that he had been addicted to mephedrone for the past few months. He claimed that in November, one Asif Shaikh had first given the drug to him and his friends forcibly.

"As per the victim, he would sometimes sniff MD and sometimes mix it with paan masala. He said that initially he used to feel fresh after consuming it, but later he witnessed a change in his behaviour and growing frustration. His habit soon turned into addiction," said an officer from Dongri police station.

The complainant told the police that his regular consumption resulted in some skin-related ailments and when he confronted Shaikh, he told him to continue with the consumption as it would give immense strength, police said.

Anticipating that Shaikh could force other youths from the area into drug abuse, the police immediately registered a case against him, and sent the complainant to J J Hospital for medical examination, where doctors took his blood sample and sent it for chemical analysis.

On Sunday, following a tip-off, the police apprehended Shaikh from near Sandhurst Road railway station, and seized from him 125 gram of a powdered substance, believed to be MD worth Rs10 lakh, electronic weighing machine and a dual SIM mobile phone.
