KANPUR: Stage is set for election of eight corporators for Cantonment Board as voting would take place here on Sunday. As many as 85,128 voters of eight wards would cast their votes to elect their representatives. The voting will take place from 7am to 5pm. All preparations for the polling have been completed. Polling parties for all 87 polling booths have reached their respective booths, informed Sharda Prasad, the returning officer.

Though canvassing ended on Friday evening, but the candidates continued to solicit support of voters on Saturday. A total 62 candidates are in the fray. Except BJP candidates, other candidates are contesting without party symbols. But the posters and banners of the candidates clearly show which party is supporting them. BJP leader and Union minister Sadhwi Niranjan Jyoti recently visited the Cantonment area and appealed to the people to vote for the BJP supported candidates.
The returning officer said that the polling parties had been given training on Friday evening, and adequate police force deployed at all 11 polling centres.
Amit Kumar, chief executive officer of Cantonment Board said that one electronic voting machine (EVM) for each booth had been allocated. The board had asked for 120 EVMs, and out of them 14 EVMs were used in training of polling parties. 87 EVMs would be used in the election while remaining would be kept in reserve, he said.
EVMs have been allocated on the basis of number of voters at each booth. In ward number-2 there would be 3 EVMs for each booth and two EVMs would be kept in Ward-5 while in other booths there would be one EVM for each booth, said Kumar.
"If a voter does not have voter I-card but his name is in the electoral list, he will be allowed to cast his/her vote but only after establishing his identity by showing either ration card, Aaadhar card, Pan card or ID card of the Cantonment School" said CEO.He said that counting would take place on January 12 and the results would be declared on the same day.
