Sanjay Dutt fails to get leave extension, back in jail

Dutt cited medical issues as the reason behind seeking extension of his furlough
New Delhi/Mumbai: As a controversy rages on film actor Sanjay Dutt getting repeated paroles and furloughs from jail, the Centre has put the ball in the Maharashtra government’s court seeking its response on a plea pending before President Pranab Mukherjee for remission of Dutt’s remaining jail term in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
On Saturday, Dutt returned to Yerwada Central Jail in Pune after the prison authorities rejected his application seeking an extension of the furlough period which came to an end on Thursday. Dutt had come out of jail on December 24 on a furlough.
Just as new Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday, the MHA is sending a fresh missive to the new BJP government in the state on the issue of remission of Dutt’s remaining sentence.
The issue has been hanging fire as the previous Congress-NCP government in the state had kept its response pending. Justice Markandey Katju had written to the President seeking his assent for the remission of Dutt’s remaining prison sentence. The President had sent the file to the Union home ministry for its opinion.
The ministry had then sought the opinion of the Maharashtra government as the crime had taken place in the state. Since the state was in the middle of the electoral process, there was no reply from the state government, sources said.
On Saturday, Dutt cited medical issues as the reason behind seeking extension of his furlough, but the jail authorities rejected it, saying they can provide the necessary medical assistance.
The 55-year-old actor had given an application to the Khar police station seeking extension of his furlough period as a no objection certificate is required from them.
