Episode 40 of Fairy Tail 2, titled “Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer,” puts the mages of Fairy Tail and Yukino against the 13th Golden Celestial Spirit known as Ophiuchus. You should already know that this is part of the filler arc for Fairy Tail 2 to ensure the anime series does not catch up to the manga. It is reminiscent to the filler arc in Bleach, where the Zanpakutos develop personalities of their own and rebel against their masters.
This is exact what the Golden Celestial Spirits, named off the Zodiac, have done with Lucy Heartfilia and Yukino Aguria. You can tell that this is a showdown with Ophiuchus, who seems to be the leader of the rebellion against their masters.
Ophiuchus, revealed to be female, wastes no time in attacking anybody that tries to hinder her plans.
The darker versions of the Celestial Spirits are no joke as they effortlessly manhandled the likes of protagonist Natsu Dragneel, who is burning up with a high fever because of an attack from Ophiuchus, the 13th Golden Celestial Spirit.
Lucy’s monologue to Virgo was emotional, which reminds us why she is one of the most beloved characters in Fairy Tail.
Arcadios coming to Natsu’s rescue surprised me. I thought he was going to stand back and act as Princess Hisui’s bodyguard while the Fairy Tail wizards would do the work and stop the Liberum ritual from being complete.
I was shocked, but not surprised to learn that the Celestial Spirit King went insane and orchestrated this whole rebellion. I thought Ophiuchus was the one, but I was wrong. This makes me think of the Captain Amagai filler arc from Bleach.
You can always count on Natsu and his reckless tendencies to save the day.
I didn’t expect Lucy and Yukino to band together and unleash Urano Metria on Virgo and Libra, but I always look forward to watching that awesome magical attack. It is rare for Lucy to use Urano Metria because it takes a lot out of her, but I always look forward to watching that move in action.
Urano Metria is one of the most awesome moves in Fairy Tail.
The next revelation of the sealing of the Celestial Spirits didn’t surprise me at all, which I felt there was a lack of originality there. Fairy Tail fell into the typical cliché of being tricked to do the villain’s dirty work. That meant the Celestial Spirit King secretly intended for all 12 Celestial Spirits to be sealed away.
Ophiuchus laid out another surprise by lying about the Celestial King, which I didn’t see coming.
Happy’s response to everything made me laugh. This is the first time I have seen Happy use a phrase that children are not allowed to say out of fear of being smacked and/or grounded. It was cute and adorable when Happy says it.
It is an understatement to say that Happy is “growing up.” I am surprised that Ophiuchus is going along with the whole plan even at the expense of her own life, which makes her the ideal jihadist for the Celestial Spirit King.
This was an all right episode, but I’ve seen better.
I hope there will be a better fill arc after this one his over. The reason I say filler arc is that I don’t expect Fairy Tail to start to the “Tartarus Arc” yet because that is still ongoing in the manga. I already watched a similar filler in Bleach.
While I say this episode is all right, I can’t wait for this arc to end. I felt the main characters were getting too out of character. The arc had too many unoriginal ideas like a dance contest, a quiz, and a card battle.
At least I got to see Urano Metria be used again.
