Centre working on new crop insurance policy: Yeddyurappa

January 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - KALABURAGI:

Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president and the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that the Union government has proposed a crop insurance policy to help farmers get the insurance amount at the earliest.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that he had discussed the problems faced by farmers in the State with Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh in Bengaluru on Friday and Mr. Singh had told him that the Centre was working on the new scheme.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the fixing of higher minimum support price for agriculture produce too was discussed.

No incentives

He alleged that the State government did not provide incentives to farmers or increase procurement prices for agriculture produce such as paddy and maize.

The government was yet to announce the procurement price for red gram and sugarcane, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

He said that the State government should earmark more funds for market intervention and save farmers.

To a question, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the law and order situation in the State was in a bad shape and the inept handing of the situation by Home Minister K.J. George had landed the State in a piquant situation. He told another reporter that the BJP had not given up the controversy over the denotification of land for the Arkavathi Layout and the party was exploring all avenues to bring to book the culprits.
