City teen’s mammoth 240 off 124 balls helps school win cricket tourney

Sulochanadevi Singhania School won the H T Bhandari trophy at the recently held under-16 inter-school cricket tournament. The lads from Singhania put up a tough game for the boys of Saraswati English School, who won the runner’s up title. The game was organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) at Kalyan, on Friday.

THANE: Sulochanadevi Singhania School won the H T Bhandari trophy at the recently held under-16 inter-school cricket tournament. The lads from Singhania put up a tough game for the boys of Saraswati English School, who won the runner’s up title. The game was organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) at Kalyan, on Friday.
After winning the toss, Singhania School chose to bat.
They went on to set a grand target of 412 runs and 3 wickets for the opposite team. Singhania’s Vighnesh Kharge was the star batsman as he scored a whopping 240 runs off just 124 balls. With 35 boundaries and 6 sixes, Kharge took his team to victory.
‘‘I played my heart out and this is why I managed to score all these runs. This has been my best innings ever and after putting 240 runs on board, my team- mates were at a commanding position from where victory was not far away,’’ said Kharge.
Kharge was supported by Tejas Shighvan who scored 73 runs and Viraj Gosavi who made 44 runs and was not out.
Saraswati School were all out at 141. Chaitanya S scored 76 runs but this could not get his team to the grand total that was put up by the boys of Singhania.
In the bowling front, Vineet Bhat and Kunik Nayyar from Singhania took three wickets each, while Sarvagya Dev took 2 wickets. ‘‘Our players excelled in both batting as well as bowling,’’ said Naresh Waghmare, coach of Singhania School.
