A Standing Committee on Environment and Forests headed by Ashwani Kumar has started consultations on the TSR Subramanian Committee Report, which reviewed the environmental laws.
The Parliamentary panel met representatives of eight civil society bodies on Friday. Kumar said the standing committee’s aim is to “disseminate information among Parliamentarians on issues that are already in the public domain.
The TSR Subramanian Committee report, which was made public in December, has been facing flak from several quarters on the grounds that it would weaken existing environmental laws, and focusing on “making business easy.”
Kumar added, “I would like it (the discussions by the Standing Committee) to be extensive. The recommendations have to be considered carefully and report can’t be submitted in a hurried form.”
It is believed that the Government is keen on presenting amendments to green laws, on the basis of the TSR Subramanian Committee report, during the Budget Session of Parliament. However, considering the strong opposition to the report such a move may be delayed.
