Mumbai's A-ward, which is the city's VIP ward, has plans to provide a facelift to a handful of spots. A proposal for the beautification and remodelling of the road leading from Metro Cinema junction right up to Regal Cinema is being considered. Phase I of the proposed project includes refurbishing of the road between Metro Cinema junction and Fashion Street.

Chandrashekhar Chore, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A-ward, shares, "We have these plans up our sleeve and the paper work has started for it. There's still time for the plans to start taking shape on the ground."
The proposed Phase I includes beautification of the road leading from the Metro Cinema junction up to Chaphekar Bandhu Chowk (the older VSNL building junction). According to officials, this project will take also care of the randomly built structures and chowkies that are seen on this patch.

The proposal also includes reinstating the Fitzgerald lamp and fountain ensemble at the Metro junction. Chore explains, "A lesser known fact of this area is that there was a Fitzgerald lamp and a fountain at the Metro Cinema junction several years ago. During the junction's widening, the heritage fountain and the lamp were moved to the premises of Byculla's Jijamata Udyaan. We have proposed to move these heritage items back to the Metro junction."

Pedestrian-friendly road
Another part of the proposal aims to make the entire road pedestrian-friendly. The proposal includes widening of footpaths and construction of cycling tracks. Chore adds, "Currently, the architects are in the process of submitting drawings and it might take some time for implementation. We are certainly adopting a pedestrian-friendly policy."

Fashion Street has not just sprawled across a long stretch of the road, it has covered the space vertically too. Both sides of the street have open spaces and greenery, which make for a great view. Unfortunately, this cannot be enjoyed as the stalls are built haphazardly. Chore concludes, "One side of this popular street is lined by the Bombay Gymkhana Ground and the other by the Cross Maidan Ground. So, we have proposed to remodel the stalls on Fashion Street in a way that the view does not get obstructed."
