A special police team formed to investigate the attack on P. Muthuraman, district president of the BJP’s traders’ wing, on January 2, arrested two persons here on Thursday.

According to police, M. Maheen (29) of Ilangadai and S. Dharvesh (27) of Idalakudi have been arrested and a manhunt to nab four others is on. The duo had allegedly confessed to the police that they were members of a religious organisation and were following Mr. Muthuraman since the RSS had conducted rallies in two places in the district. They took photographs of Mr. Muthuraman in RSS uniform during the rally and shared it with other members.

Two earlier attempts on the life of the BJP functionary had failed but they managed to attack him in the third attempt. Police have launched a manhunt for four others – Thahir and Thoushik of Idalakkudi and Ashraf Ali and Hakim of Ilandagai. A top police official told The Hindu that two persons had been taken into custody in connection with the attack on Sheik Ali, who sustained injuries in the violence that took place immediately after the attack on Mr. Muthuraman.

The arrested persons were produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody.
