A group of engineering students from different parts of the State have embarked upon a cycle jatha from Mysuru to New Delhi to spread awareness on the growing crime against women and children.
The cyclists began their ‘Delhi Chalo-2222’ rally from Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple near the palace on Thursday. They plan to cover the journey in 25 days. (2,222 is the distance the cyclists will cover to reach their destination).
One of the group members, Siddesh, who is a 7th semester mechanical engineering student from Madegowda Institute of Technology, Mandya, told The Hindu that more students are expected to join the group en route. “We plan to pedal about 80 km a day and complete the rally within 25 days,” he said.
The focus of their message at transit camps will be on the increasing crime against women and children and the need to curb it. “We will distribute pamphlets and leaflets on the importance of ‘swachh bharat abhiyan’ as well,” according to Mr. Siddesh.
En route, the cyclists will cover Nagamangala, Chitradurga, Hosapete, Solapura, Beed, Indore, Ujjain, Jaipur, before terminating at Delhi. The students will meet Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and submit a memorandum.
