NEW DELHI: The Navy will showcase its first supersonic fighter, MiG-29K, and long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, Poseidon-8I, in the Republic Day parade this year, which will have US President Barack Obama as the chief guest.
One P-8I and two MiG-29Ks will fly in a “victor formation” in the customary January 26 flypast, which is traditionally dominated by the IAF, to signal the prowess of the growing naval aviation wing.
The Navy has so far inducted 29 of the 45 MiG-29Ks, ordered from Russia for around $2 billion, to operate from the deck of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. The carrier, the refitted Admiral Gorshkov, itself cost $2.33 billion.
The Navy, in turn, has inducted six of the eight P-8I aircraft ordered from the US in a $2.1 billion deal inked in January 2009. A repeat order of another four P-8Is, which have potent anti-submarine warfare capabilities, is also in the pipeline now.
