Samples will go to UK or US for chemical expertise

According to sources, a request has been sent to the said countries and their response is now awaited.

A procedure has been initiated under MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty) to send the viscera samples of Sunanda Pushkar abroad for examination. The two countries where samples may be sent have been identified as the UK and US, sources revealed.

Of the 34 countries under MLAT, the police have selected the UK and US as favourable member nations for the examination. The police have made the selection on the basis of forensic expertise of the respective countries for the chemical analyses.

According to sources, a request has been sent to the said countries and their response is now awaited. “Once either of the countries agree to conduct the forensic examination, further process will be initiated and samples sent for testing,” an officer said.

According to sources, once the doctors abroad agree to carry out the examination and all formalities are done, the toxicological tests are videographed. The team of doctors who conduct the tests then have to depose before the court with their final report and analysis. The team of doctors can depose before the court through video-conferencing.

It was also revealed that most of the countries under MLAT tend to ask for a formal case to be registered before they take up the matter for examination. When a criminal case is registered it expedites the procedure. “Registration of a criminal case makes it easier and faster to push for such an examination,” Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said.
