Suicide bombers attack Afghan police academy

Huge explosions and gunfire rock the border city of Khost, as Taliban attack police academy in eastern Afghanistan.

Taliban fighters have launched a coordinated attack on a police academy in the eastern city of Khost, using suicide bombers and gunmen, according to reports.

At least three huge explosions were reported at Khost’s police academy on Wednesday, as three Taliban fighters tried to storm the compound.

Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said one of the attackers detonated his explosives at the gates of the academy, while two others engaged in battles with security forces before detonating their devices.

Our correspondent said there were five other reported injuries, involving three civilians and two policemen.

Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The province of Khost on the border with Pakistan is a stronghold of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network.
