U.P. Governor to decide on disqualification of MLAs

Political tempers in Uttar Pradesh are set to rise as Governor Ram Naik is likely to act on Lokayukta N.K. Mehrotra’s recommendation seeking disqualification of two MLAs for violating the Representation of the People Act.

After Lokayukta N.K. Mehrotra last week recommended sacking of the two MLAs -- Bahujan Samak Party’s Uma Shankar Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bajrang Bahadur Singh – who were found to be “working as contractors after being elected to State Assembly”, the Governor had written to the Election Commission of India seeking its opinion on the issue.

According to official sources, the Governor’s office has received opinion of the ECI and he is likely to take a decision on the issue after he returns from his Mumbai visit next week. Mr. Naik has also taken the matter seriously as it relates to serious violation of the Representation of the People Act. And if he accepts the Lokayukta's recommendation, it would create flutter in the political circles.

The Governor is also to take action against Samajwadi Party MLA from Charkhari, Kaptan Singh Rajput, who was on Monday awarded life imprisonment in over 10-year-old murder case.
