Steps taken to ease traffic on Charmadi Ghat stretch: SP

'The movement of heavy vehicles has been restricted'

Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa has said measures have been taken to ease traffic congestion on Charmadi Ghat stretch, following the closure of Shiradi Ghat for repair works.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of SC/ST review meeting here, on Tuesday, he said the road at a few curves have been widened by removing bushes.

This has reduced woes  of the public travelling from the coast to capital. As there is network problem in Charmadi area, wireless communication system has been installed. The police have been deployed in the region to monitor the traffic.

It was a challenge to reduce the density of vehicles on the first two -day of the closure of Shiradi Ghat road. The movement of heavy vehicles have been restricted. The public should cooperate to ease the traffic congestion.

Harassment of Dalit

Earlier, when a student asked the solution for the alleged harassment on a Dalit by another Dalit and what is the punishment for violating the rules, the SP said that to overcome the harassment, people should join police department and bring in changes in society.

Another Dalit leader said that the applications to various posts in police department are rejected citing frivolous reasons, the SP said that the recruitment is carried out through mobile webcasting. Only the eligible are selected. People should start trusting the police department.

Essay competition
The SP said that the department has received an overwhelming response for the essay competition organised as a part of crime prevention month. A total of 510 essays have been received. The names of the winners will be announced shortly.

Lack of interest
The SP said that a total of 1,238 applications were received for recruiting 50 police personnel in Dakshina Kannada district. As many as 650 applicants had attended physical fitness test and 315 had passed the exam. The persons selected from DK district are only a handful. The public should take interest in serving the police department.

Dalit leader S P Anand said that officials from Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, Ambedkar Development Corporation and Social welfare department are not attending the review meeting.

Safety of girl children
The SP said that the police department is planning to conduct a training programme on safety of schoolchildren with regard to ragging, sexual assault, assault by the teachers and so on. The proposal is in the initial stage.
