A day after his arrest, undertrial commits suicide inside Chamoli jail

Man arrested in connection with rape cum murder case of a 22-year-old commits suicide in jail.

A day after his arrest in connection with the murder case of a woman (22 yrs) who was PWD’s contractual Junior Engineer at Gopeshwar, 24-year-old youth Nitin Kumar committed suicide inside Chamoli jail on Tuesday.

Nitin was charged with raping and then, strangulating to death the PWD Junior Engineer. As per the police claim, the woman was his former girlfriend and Nitin had wanted to marry her. Nitin was a native of Kishanpur village under Bhagwanpur police station of Hardwar district. Nitin had reportedly confessed to have raped the woman before killing her, police had claimed after Nitin’s arrest.

On being contacted, SP (Chamoli) Sunil Kumar Meena said Nitin committed suicide inside Chamoli jail by hanging himself with water pipe with the help of his muffler on Tuesday morning.

Station House Officer (Gopeshwar) Chamdra Mohan Singh Negi said

Nitin was in relationship with the woman and wanted to marry her. According to him, Nitin had visited Gopeshwar on January 2 and met the woman. Negi added he tried to convince her to marry him. “The woman was reluctant to marry him. Later he raped her and then, strangulated her to death,” SHO Negi claimed on the basis of police investigation. Her body was found in a house in PWD colony in Gopeshwar town. Later, police arrested Nitin and sent him to jail.
