BENGALURU: A record 202 Kannada films came before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) regional office here for certification during 2014.
The number is huge, considering Sandalwood usually sees 120-130 releases every year. In 2014, about 115 Kannada films were released.
M Nagendra Swamy, CBFC regional officer, told TOI: “There were days when we screened six movies in a single day.”
Of the 202 films, the board declined certification to six movies for lacking in cinematic standards and aesthetic values.
While Ananda Giri, Namaste India, Naanu, Avalu Mathu Kannadi and Gaali Beeja were rejected for not adhering to cinematic standards, the other two — School Makkalu and Notorious — were denied certification for their violent and vulgar content. Notorious was rejected by the revising committee (RC), too.
The industry, however, has not taken kindly to some of the rejections by the board. A scheduled meeting between a group of film personalities and Nagendra Swamy on the issue did not take place on Monday. The Sandalwood delegation was to include G Kappanna, TS Nagabharana, TN Seetharam, B Suresha, P Sheshadri, KM Chaitanya, Chi Su Krishna Shetty and Nanda Kishore.
Suresha is miffed at being told to cut a 45-second scene in Devara Nadalli. “My film has been given U/A certificate with a single cut. They want me to axe a scene that shows a panel discussion on TV with some graphics. I am not going to oblige the board. I will move the RC and if I don’t get a favourable decision, I will move the tribunal too.’’
