Accused has TB, told to not attend court
Chandrabhan Sanap, accused of raping and killing Andhra Pradesh techie Esther Anuhya, has been found to be suffering from tuberculosis for the last one month. Sanap, 28, has now been directed by asessions court, where the trial is under way, to not appear in the court for the fear of him spreading the disease.

The Arthur Road jail superintendent has already submitted a letter to the court, saying he had stopped taking medicines a couple of weeks ago.

The accused’s lawyer, Prakash Salsingikar, has submitted that Sanap be shifted to J J Hospital. “He has been ailing for the last two months and a test at J J Hospital last month revealed TB. He has lost around 20 kg and must be shifted to J J Hospital,” the lawyer said.

According to police, Sanap, a thief, met Esther Anhuya at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla where she had landed from Machilipatnama on January 5 last year. Posing as a taxi driver, he offered to drop her at Andheri for Rs 300. They spoke for three minutes and she agreed to travel on his bike.

Anuhya’s partially burnt body was found on January 17 in the bushes in Bhandup, off Eastern Express Highway. The court is in the process of examining witnesses. “Eighteen witnesses have testified and there are more to go,” Salsingikar said.
