There were massive traffic snarls in Ghaziabad extending up to parts of East Delhi after a section of the National Highway 24 was cordoned off because of a mudslide in an elevated section of the road on Monday morning. Senior officials of the district administration said that a portion of the mud which supports the elevated highway right next to the Hindon bridge fell away, resulting in the road becoming dangerous for motorists.

Senior district officials said the incident was reported around 9 am. “Residents of villages nearby alerted traffic police personnel that a cave-in had taken place and after immediately stopping traffic, the district administration was called in. While the road itself was not affected because of the earth under the elevated structure coming loose, there were dangers of a cave-in of the road itself,” a senior district official said.

With the incident occurring during peak-hour traffic, there were massive jams on both sides of the national highway, extending into sections of East Delhi. A senior Ghaziabad police officer said, “Traffic was heavy with jams extending for several kilometres on both sides of the highway. The affected areas included the Indirapuram, Sahibabad and Mohan Nagar sections of Ghaziabad, as well as Ghazipur and even parts of Mayur Vihar in Delhi.”

Vimal Kumar Sharma, district magistrate, said, “There are pipelines that run close to the Hindon bridge and thus far it seems that one of them may have had a leakage, causing the mud to come lose and fall away. The Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, police as well as a team from NHAI are investigating the cause. Restoration work began soon after it was reported and the first movement of light vehicles such as motorcycles commenced in the evening. The road should be opened for traffic by Tuesday morning.”
