A Polish man in his 40s was rescued Monday night from a crevasse on Hornsund fjord on Spitsbergen island, Norwegian news agency NTB reported in a dispatch from Longyearbyen.

The man, a member of the Polish research station at Hornsund, fell about six meters into the crack where he became stuck.

A rescue team including Red Cross personnel arrived at the scene at 17:00 p.m. (1600 GMT) and pulled him out.

The man was found conscious and flown to Longyearbyen, a small city on the Svalbard archipelago, after a preliminary medical examination.

The temperature was minus 6 or 7 degrees Celsius in the area during the rescue operation, the report said. Endit
