Ilaiyaraaja sends notice to film team for using his song without permission

Veteran music director Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal notice to the team behind the recent film Kappal and director Shankar, who released the movie under his banner, alleging that they have used his song Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandhu from the 1989-film Karagattakkaran without his permission.
A source in the films team says that they had bought the rights from the label Agi Music in April 2014, when the label had the rights to the song, but apparently, the labels rights have lapsed and there is already a case going on in the High Court on this.
Ilaiyaraaja had initiated legal proceedings against the company in September 2014, and got an interim injunction restraining the label from selling his songs. The source adds that while the team is now waiting for a hearing on the injunction scheduled for January 6, they are also sorting out this issue with the composer.
Meanwhile, a source close to the maestro explains the reason behind the notice, Ever since the use of the song Siru Ponmani (from Kallukkul Eeram) in Subramaniapuram, many filmmakers have started using Raaja sirs compositions from the 1980s in their films in the last few years. Some have personally sought his permission to use the songs, but he was concerned that most of them were getting away with it without seeking his permission or paying any royalty and so, decided to put a check on this practice.
