Cheran to meet city cops seeking support to his move to end piracy
Director Cheran is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the solution he has proposed to the problem of video piracy succeeds. The director-actor, who is now launching a platform through which the public can buy legally valid, original DVDs of a film the same day it releases in theatres, is meeting senior police officers in each district of the state to request their co-operation.
Talking to Chennai Times, Nivetha Priyadharshini, Cherans daughter, who is closely associated with the platform that Cheran is launching, says, My father met senior police officers in Coimbatore on Thursday to seek their support to stamp out the menace of pirated film DVDs and CDs. He also gave the cops a list of all our dealers and distributors in the area and requested them that they provide our people protection and also extend their co-operation.
She adds, Dad met the officers in Villupuram and also in Trichy. On January 5, he will meet officers in Madurai. He will also be meeting senior police officers in Chennai either on Jan 6 or 7. The film industry has been suffering huge losses due to the menace of video piracy. A few months ago, the director had announced that he was launching a platform through which he would deliver the CDs and DVDs of new films to the public, legally. This, he said, was to ensure that the makers of the films get the revenue that rightfully belongs to them which he said was otherwise going to those indulging in video piracy.
Meanwhile...
Actor-director Cheran met the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore recently and requested him to take stringent action against those selling pirated DVDs and CDs of films. He also submitted a letter to the Commissioner in which he sought his co-operation and requested protection for his staff in the city.
When CT spoke to S Ramkumar, one of the distributors in Coimbatore, he said, As Director Cheran's initiative is the first of its kind, he wants to make an advance reservation of DVDs for his upcoming film JK Enum Nanbabnin Vazhkai. Our staff will be doing a door-to-door campaign and will take into account the number of people who want to buy the DVD of this film. This is to avoid wastage. We will give away coupons to the families. The DVDs will be supplied to these households on January 15, the day the film hits the theatres. There are 330 dealers in the Coimbatore region (including Tiruppur and Nilgiris).
