State of affairs in Sindh

Letter January 03, 2015
This is a reflection of the moral degradation, barbarism and savagery that exists in our society

SHIKARPUR: The undeniable reality is this that human rights violations in Sindh have reached a very high level.

Incidents of sexual abuse especially with minor children, child marriages, killings of minorities, honour killings and forced marriages are taking place commonly but a large number of such kind of cases are not reported due to social and cultural taboos. Besides, child labour and bonded labour continue unchecked and unabated.

The provincial police do not implement the laws relating to the curbing of sexual abuse, harassment and molestation of women, with the result that incidents of rapes and gang-rapes, especially of minor girls and boys, have increased considerably.

Recently, a five-year-old girl was gang-raped and strangled to death in Larkana. This is a reflection of the moral degradation, barbarism and savagery that exists in our society. A prime example of human rights violation is the existing condition of the people of Tharparkar. Residents are deprived of basic needs and facilities such as food and clean drinking water and lack adequate healthcare facilities. The result has been most tragic, with hundreds of children dying because of malnutrition.

Civil society organisations, social activists, enlightened individuals, the media and educational institutions have to play a vital role in mobilising the government and the state to fulfil its responsibility of providing the people of Sindh their basic rights.
