RSS pracharak Rajeshwar Singh, convenor of the Dharm Jagran Samanway Samiti which has been spearheading the ‘ghar wapsi’ reconversion campaign in western UP and Uttarakhand, has quietly gone “on leave”.
He had supervised the ‘ghar wapsi’ ceremony at Agra which led to an uproar and brought the government under opposition fire inside and outside Parliament.
While RSS sources said he had been told to “lie low”, Rajeshwar Singh told The Indian Express Thursday: “I have taken leave for a few months. I will rest and undergo treatment at the Arsh Gurukul in Etah (Uttar Pradesh). My new role will be decided in June after the Sangh Shiksha Varg, like every year (when postings and transfer of RSS pracharaks are made).”He said he had diabetes and minor ailments.
The Dharm Jagran, a Sangh affiliate, has been conducting a ‘ghar wapsi’ campaign to “return” Muslims and Christians to the Hindu fold.
The uproar over its Agra ceremony forced cancellation of another planned by Rajeshwar Singh in Aligarh on December 25.
A senior RSS pracharak said: “He is on leave. There is no question of a replacement.” With the BJP-led government at the Centre coming under opposition attack for not stopping the campaign, sources said Singh had been sidelined.
An RSS pracharak since 1971, he was appointed Dharm Jagran in-charge of the Braj region in 1996.
Later, he was also given charge of western UP and Uttarakhand.
