Yet another gift race for Amazing Grace

By: Frankel   December 28 , 2014

Pesi Shroff trained Amazing Grace picked up yet another graded race hardly raising a sweat en route to picking up the 1800 metres Jewel Royals Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy, a terms race for three year olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s races. Favourites cornered majority of the races with two races consumed by rank outsiders.

Amazing Grace hasn`t looked back since hitting peak form during the Bangalore Summer Season. Amazing Grace won four races on the trot at Bangalore and then followed it up with two more wins at Pune which included the Gr 1 Indian St Leger. Easily the best four year old currently racing in India, Amazing Grace was not expected to be troubled by any of the runners while extending her winning streak. Trevor Patel had Amazing Grace chasing the pace setter Master Shifu well into the straight before asking the daughter of Hurricane Run to quicken. Amazing Grace completed the formalities without being flashy in her victory. Keukenhof held off Mountbatten for the runner up berth. Amazing Grace looks the likely candidate to break the monopoly of four year olds winning the Invitation Cup race in March considering the fact that she is going great guns and ideally suited for longer trips. Be Safe could be her likely challenger if he passes the Indian Derby test.

Shroff saddled three winners all of which were at cramped odds. The daughter of Footstepsinthsand, Gabriella was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Kheem Singh Gold Cup, a race for two year olds. Jockey Zervan struggled hard to keep the favourite on an even keel as the filly refused to obey his commands as she drifted out to the outer rail despite which she was good enough to spare three lengths to late rallying Phoenix Fire. Possibly she could be another Maisha in the making.

The Big Bull was the other winner trained by Shroff. The Big Bull was alerted to his task inside the final 300 metres and before long the progeny of Razeen asserted his supremacy to win the 1600 metres Jasdanwalla Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, with great ease from Wentworth who showed some resolution while finishing second. Caruso showed aggression in the straight but flattened as she reportedly burst her blood vessels.

Cooji Katrak who became an absentee trainer during his long suspension for medication breach continues to remain one even though there are no restrictions on him. Possibly he had a premonition that his favourites would fail and did not want to be embarrassed with any rude remark by the crowd. Last outing runaway winner Made To Measure was backed spiritedly ahead of Fibonacci Sequence to win the 1400 metres Damodardas C Shah Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Made To Measure proved a big disappointment as he packed up like a pricked balloon after giving company to favourite Fibonacci Sequence till the final bend. Fibonacci Sequence quickened well in the final furlong to win the race with comfort from Zenofic and Egyptiana.

Another dud that Katrak fired was Himalayan Queen who was widely expected to make amends sin the 1000 metres Squanderer Double Stakes because on the last occasion she was pinched from getting a clear run at the start and again in the straight. Himalayan Queen disappointed yet again with a dismal performance finishing a poor fourth. The speedy Ravello led from the start and appeared to have an edge but rank outsider Merchantofvenice was able to get the better of the front runner in the closing strides of the race. Don Corleone was in the hunt but failed to produce that bit extra. Kazuri was another fancied runner to disappoint in the race.

Unfancied Sky Jet produced a strong gallop in the final furlong to edge past fancied Chase The Ace and landed the spoils in the 1000 metres Jehangir P Dubash Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Chase The Ace shaped like a winner but slackened in the shadow of the post. Blue Bay was in the hunt but her chances were hurt by her busting blood vessels. Soothsayer was not unduly pressed by his jockey to finish a leisurely fourth. Extreme Love who was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race was hard pressed to win from Plan B who bolted to the front from the wide outside draw and refused to budge from there. Extreme Love just about measured the front runner close home. Flynn warmed up late to finish a close third.
Favourite Argyle Pink got control of the 2400 metres White Metal Plate, a race for lowest rated horses midway in the straight and won without being tested by any of the runners. Azadegan showed some flourish with a late bid claiming the second spot.
