‘Midi-buses’ to hit Whitefield roads

‘Midi-buses’ to hit Whitefield roads
For techies and others professionals relying on autos and taxis to reach their offices in and around ITPB and Electronic city, there’s some good news: the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to operate eight Chakra (or ‘midi‘-buses), covering 15 to 20 km, connecting residential areas, layouts and business and IT parks at ITPL. A similar project will be introduced in Electronic City later. Initially, the services will be introduced in Whitefield, covering places like K R Puram, Hoodi circle, Mahadevapura and Kadugodi. The bus fare will be same as ordinary buses.

Managing director of BMTC Ekroop Caur said, “Though a vast number of buses operate from various points to tech corridors, there is no local mobility in the area. The operation of Chakra buses (midi- buses) will meet the increasing demand and it will act as feeder services. We have introduced Chakra buses in the other parts of city and we receive a good response from public.”
A BMTC official said, “When we introduced these services elsewhere, the response was not so good .We were earning Rs 7 to Rs 8 per km, but now it has picked up and it has increased to Rs 25 per km and it’s improving. People have positively responded. First, we will introduce in Whitefield covering important points like K R Puram, Hoodi circle, Mahadevapura, Kadugodi and others. There is a plan to start the service from TTMC located in the Whitefield.”
The official added that operating mini-buses is easy on interior roads, residential areas and layouts. “We are operating buses at a frequency of 10-15 minutes. To start with, we will operate four buses to and fro. In case, there is demand, we will increase the number of services.”
