The Fiji Police Force (FPF) is continuing to monitor and warn members of the public against using the Nasese Foreshore and Suva Point until further notice.

This was after the trunk line at the creek at the Wainivula Creek collapsed earlier this month spilling tonnes of raw sewage into the creek which has its mouth at the Vatuwaqa foreshore.

Fiji Police Force chief of operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu commended members of the public for following directives to stay away from the creek and nearby areas.

Disaster Management Committee director Manasa Tagicakibau said people were not to use creeks, rivers and sea close to the Suva foreshore for swimming, boating, fishing or recreational purposes.

“The situation that we have is that the spillage continuously discharges raw sewage into the Wainivula Creek and it has vastly contaminated the river,” Mr Tagicakibau said. He said it was now moving into the Laucala Bay basin and the seafront of Suva Point and the Suva foreshore.

“There is a need to prevent people from using the river and sea that have been affected by the waste water from the broken trunk line.”

Mr Tagicakibau said they had notices around the area to inform the public about the impact of the spillage, the use of water system and the use of marine life for their food source.
