KUCHING: Many parts of Sarawak are expected to experience downpour from today until New Year’s Eve, which could result in floods.

The Malaysian Meterological Department (MET) has issued a ‘yellow stage’ advisory on the possibility of monsoon rain over Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Betong divisions.

A ‘yellow-stage’ advisory for heavy rains denotes conditions that might include strong winds and flash floods.

In Kuching city and Kota Samarahan, the weatherman, in its website, forecasted it would be ‘raining the whole day’ from today until Dec 31 for both areas. The same weather prediction also goes for Sibu town.

After Dec 31, most parts of the state are expected to experience isolated rainfall and thunderstorms until Jan 3.

A forecaster at the meteorological office here, when contacted yesterday, said intermittent rain and strong winds were expected in the next three days in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Betong divisions.

Other divisions were expected to experience isolated thunderstorms during those three days.

The forecaster, however, did not want to reveal the amount of rainfall expected, stressing it would be ‘higher than usual’.

Floods are currently hitting Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, causing more than 100,000 people to be evacuated. Heavy rains are expected to continue there as the MET had also issued ‘yellow-stage’ advisory for Perlis, north of Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, and Kudat and Sandakan in Sabah, from today until Dec 31.
