AJK Jamaat leader passes away

Aleefuddin Turabi was suffering from the heart disease.

Former Deputy Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Jammu and Kashmir (JIAJK) and a religious scholar Aleefuddin Turabi died in Islamabad on Sunday at the age of 73. He was suffering from the heart disease.


He was laid to rest at the H-11 graveyard. A large number of people including JI activists and local leaders attended the funeral.

For the last one year he was suffering from the heart disease. Born in Poonch city of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir in 1941, Prof Turabi devoted his whole life for the Kashmir cause.

He migrated to Pakistan in 1965 after actively participating in the 1965 war against India in Poonch area.



After migrating to Azad Kashmir, Turabi resumed his studies and did his masters in Islamic Studies in 1968 and masters in Arabic in 1970 from Punjab University. He taught Arabic at the university from 1972 to 1977.

In 1977 Professor Turabi went to Umm Al-Qura University at Makkah in Saudi Arabia and did his MPhil in Arabic.

He was the author of more than 20 books on Islamic world and Kashmir dispute. He was also the director of the Islamabad-based International Institute of Strategic Studies and Research (IISSR), member of International Union of Muslim Scholars Gulf, member of the Board of Trustees of Al-Quds International Foundation and other organisations.

He remained Deputy Ameer of JI AJK chapter from 1986 to 1996.

Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, President Sardar Yaqoob Khan and JIAJK Ameer Abdur Rashid Turabi offered their condolence with the bereaved family and termed the death of Prof Turabi a great loss to the Jamaat and the liberation movement of Kashmir.
