The Devaraj Urs Truck Terminal Ltd. has decided to get houses constructed for truck drivers at affordable rates across the State.

Terminal chairman S.S. Prakasham told presspersons here on Saturday that there are about 2 lakh truck drivers in the State. The State-owned terminal would strive to get at least 2,000 houses constructed in each district for the drivers.

To a question, he said the government would be requested to allot land and funds for the same and the company would oversee the construction and selection of beneficiaries. Each house should cost less than Rs. 8 lakh to the beneficiaries, he said.

The terminal also has proposals to construct highway amenities at every 250 km distance on highways, in addition to its truck terminal projects. The amenity centres should be useful to truck crew as well as general public. These centres would almost like be truck terminals, but without godowns and agents’ offices, he said.

Having taken charge recently, Mr. Prakasham said efforts are being made to expedite ongoing truck terminal projects at various places in the State, including Dasanapura near Bengaluru, Mysuru and Dharwad. New terminals are being taken up at Hosapete and Hubballi, he added.
