Legends Latest: Dwight Powell's potential

Each week, ESPNDallas.com will take a look at the Texas Legends, the D-League affiliate for the Dallas Mavericks, to see how the two teams are working hand in hand.

Rajon Rondo was the big acquisition for the Dallas Mavericks last week, but they also acquired 6-11 rookie center Dwight Powell. He may be the forgotten piece to the trade equation coming from the Boston Celtics, but the Canadian big man believes his skill set can turn him into a jack of all trades player.

“I think I'm athletic, I can shoot the ball,” Powell said during the team’s introductory press conference last week. “I take pride in my defense, try to guard multiple positions, rebound the ball. For the most part, just bring heart, bring effort.

“In the position I'm at right now, having been traded a couple of times and landing here, I'm really looking forward to the opportunity, but I also want to work as hard as I can to stay here and show my values, show my worth and contribute to this team.”

While he’s looking to stick around, he may have to look into carpooling with Ricky Ledo as both are expected to make frequent trips up and down the tollway to play with the Texas Legends. While he didn’t do much with the Celitcs, Powell did make some noise in the D-League. Playing for the Maine Red Claws, the D-League affiliate of the Celtics, Powell averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 32.0 minutes per game in four games of D-League action.

While he spent time in the D-League, he showed the ability to defend in the paint but also get out and cover the perimeter, something that could prove to be invaluable as he tries to establish himself in the NBA

“He can shoot threes, he can rebound, he can defend,” Cuban said of Powell. “He's a stretch four in a lot of respects, a stretch five in a lot of respects. He can shoot the ball, so that's why he's here, that's why we wanted him.”

He might not see a ton of time with the Mavericks immediately, but that could prove to be very valuable for the Legends.
