Shashi Tharoor is one of the most popular politicians on Twitter, perhaps not only for his political views but also his candid take on everything under the sun. Sometimes it has also landed him in trouble. But that has not stopped him from expressing his views in a clear and concise manner.
On Saturday, the author-turned politician agreed to a freewheeling chat with DNA. From his current favourite reads, to whom he wants to play if a biopic is done on him, and whether he feels shackled while writing on contemporary politics, Tharoor answered all questions with a straight bat.
When asked about which politician's 'experiment with truth' he would like to read, Tharoor had a very short reply for us.
@dna Sonia Gandhi's!

Between Jawaharal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, Tharoor put Gandhi on a pedestal but said he identified more with Nehru.
@dna Gandhiji is easy to admire, difficult to emulate. Nehruji one can identify with more personally: his mind, his values, his style

When asked if it was a conscious decision to write a book, Tharoor shows his trademark humour. Was it a veiled dig towards journalists?
@ShashiTharoor #ZeeJLF @ZEEJaipurLitFes Was writing books a conscious decision initially or a natural extension of your thought process?
— dna (@dna) December 27, 2014
@dna @ZEEJaipurLitFes Conscious. Articles in papers/mags went out with the week's raddi. I wanted to write for posterity, not th bikriwalla!

Many people think Shashi Tharoor is the right man in the wrong party. But clearly Tharoor doesn't think so.
@dna We have more to say, more ideas to offer & more experiences to recall! #ZeeJLF

Early in the chat, we hurled a bouncer at him. He handled it with languid elan..
.@dna I try not to write about matters I am obliged to be politically correct about. And even on those I am rarely deemed 2b pol'ly correct!

Tharoor started early in life as a writer. The former Union minister claims that in those days there was less distraction, hence books were his only entertainment, and writing came naturally to him.
@calamur @Cortevez @dna I had a boyhood w'out TV/PlayStation/computers. Books were my only entertainment; so writing was my natural response
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Tharoor also listed out his current reading list for DNA readers.
@dna piled on bedside: AtishTaseer, The Way Things Were; DirkCollier, TheEmperor'sWritings; DavidDavidar(ed.),Clutch of Indian Masterpieces
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
These are 5 must-reads in Tharoor's non-fiction list.

His new book is coming out in January and it deals with contemporary India covering up to 6 months of the Modi government.
@dna @ZEEJaipurLitFes Central theme of INDIA SHASTRA is contemporary India: the last 5years + 1st six months of Modi Govt. (Pols/soc/econs)

Tharoor believes that with age his writing has become much more refined and he has improved as a writer.
@dna @debasis87 I've got better! Age brings th ability2express complex ideas&emotions in clearer language, w/depth tht comes from experience
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
His last fiction novel was way back in 2001. So we asked if he plans to write fiction anytime soon.
. @dna Yes. I have too many discarded novels in my computer. This year I must start one I can stick to.

Every journalist and author dreads the word 'writer's block'. It is like the 'bad patch' for a cricketer, very hard to shrug off. Tharoor has a simple uncomplicated solution to it.
@dna @RaiSwatiRai Just keep writing. Our drivers, sweepers, cobblers aren't allowed the luxury of claiming a block: why should writers be?
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Tharoor refuses to pick his best work.
.@dna That's like asking a parent who's their best child. Each work stands by itself&for itself. I'm proud of them all.
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Tharoor also talks about his collaboration with MF Hussain for one of his books.
.@dna It was, alas, long-distance: he was in India&I in New York. We relied on mail & courier. Met later &became friends after collaboration
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
We couldn't stop but ask him about Game of Thrones..
@dna @ashokvishnoi94 My sons are fanatics, but I've neither watched nor read Game of Thrones. Of course,I closely observe th Indian version!
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Shashi Tharoor is not the usual run-of-the-mill politician and his life has enough elements to be turned into a movie.
. @dna @anshu9843 I'm not as vain as my critics think I am! Watch my videos on http://t.co/hI3sdVhL1Q instead
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
No prizes for guessing his favourite city though..
@twinklek22 @dna Thiruvananthapuram of course!
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
On the question of censorship, he unequivocally voices his opinion against it.
.@dna Completely&unconditionally opposed to banning ANY book. If you don't like it,don't buy it or read it; but don't ban it &don't burn it
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Tharoor is not overtly concerned about increasing trend of e-books taking over books. But he is concerned about fate of bookshops.
.@dna @ZEEJaipurLitFes Books will exist because authors will write them. I fear for the future of bookstores, though!
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Tharoor signs off by urging readers to read, to encourage writers to keep writing.
@profoundNflawed @dna Keep reading, to encourage the rest of us to keep writing!
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 27, 2014
Shashi Tharoor at his cheeky best.
