Anti liquor stir to intensify: Council

The anti liquor activists will launch a campaign against the UDF liquor policy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference temperance commission secretary Fr T J Antony on Friday accused Ministers K C Joseph and K Babu of targeting them to lower the morale of anti liquor activists.

He told DC that the ministers were deliberately attacking the anti liquor front campaigners to checkmate the movement that was building in the wake of changes made in liquor policy.

Fr Antony said temperance commission of KCBC had the full backing of Church leaders and the ministers were trying to create confusion in the minds of people.

The commission secretary said the campaign against the government liquor policy was not just that of KCBC but of all organisations and individuals who are fighting against alcohol and related problems.

“We have received the support of Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan. There are many other organisations which are joining hands with us,” he said.

The anti liquor activists will launch a campaign against the UDF liquor policy Government’s liquor policy in north Kerala next week. Subsequently similar campaigns will be held in central and southern parts of the state.

Fr Antony said the ministers were shielding the corrupt on the one hand and threatening people who are fighting for a cause on the other. “I think they are underestimating the people's anger against their policies,” he said.
