Family hands over acid attacker to cops

Mir Farhat
Srinagar, Dec 25: Setting an example, the family of the youth, who had attacked a girl with acid, has made him to surrender before police after two weeks.
Mohammad Omar son of Noor Mohammad of Bemina had attacked the girl, a law student from Srinagar in old city on December 11. After the attack and police’s failure to nab him, the family of the youth has asked him to surrender today morning before police.
“The family of the culprit has been very cooperative with us,” Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, A G Mir told reporters.
Mir said that Omar has executed the acid throwing on behalf of his friend, the main conspirator, Irshad Ahmad Wani alias Sunny of Wazir Bagh.
“It was a challenging case for us to solve,” the IGP said, adding, because the victim was not in a position to tell us anything and then from the social responsibility point of view as well and despite election process.
Mir said during the course of investigation, the police checked 451 Maruti vehicles and went through the footage of traffic of the area.
“We questioned many people and then zeroed on one suspect Sunny, who had been stalking the victim for some time and following her movements closely,” Mir said.
He said Sunny’s sustained interrogation led to the identification of Omar.
The IGP said Sunny planned to carry out the acid attack on the victim after his advances were spurned.
“That left him in a vengeful huff. He roped in his friend and business partner Omar to be a party to the crime who was both sympathetic as well as lured by promised financial gains. Both had been friends and ran a spare parts shop in Kupwara district,” he said.
He said Sunny had bought the acid from Batamaloo and then carefully planned every step of the gruesome attack.
“Both theses youth had recceed the spot of incident beforehand at least seven times to plan the attack down to the minutest detail,” he said.
Mir said Omar had borrowed the car from his uncle, which carried a sticker on ‘Mausa’ and not ‘Mansa’.
“Omar after carrying out the dastardly act returned home with his right hand receiving burn injuries. He cooked up a story at his home that the car had been involved in an accident. They both then fled the State,” the IGP said.
Mir said while Sunny was traced in Jammu, Omar’s family made him to surrender before the police.
He said the police was taking the crimes against women very seriously.
“My advice to all is that they should report stalking to police to prevent such attacks,” he said.
