Selectors make mass, though expected, changes in Mumbai squad

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

They have not let the massive eight wicket win over Uttar Pradesh influence their decision making. Conventional wisdom would suggest that you don’t tinker with a winning combination, but Mumbai selectors have made as many as six changes to the 15-member squad for their game against Bengal which starts in Kolkata on Sunday.

Coach Pravin Amre and skipper Suryakumar Yadav attended the meeting of the Sandeep Patil-led selection panel which decided to axe Sushant Marathe, Bravish Shetty, Kevin Almeida, Prafull Waghela and Vishal Dabholkar. Players coming in are Shrideep Mangela, Siddhesh Lad, Akhil Herwadkar, Sufiyan Shaikh, Sarfaraz Khan and Iqbal Abdullah.

With the exception of Waghela, who had injured himself on the eve of the UP game, the selectors have taken note of the fact that those dropped have not made the maximum use of the chances provided to them. Waghela too hasn’t been part of any of the three games so far.

Much was expected of experienced Shah and Marathe, who were brought into the team after the loss against J&K. But Marathe managed just 25 runs in three innings while Shah scored 46 in the two innings he got against Railways and UP. Left-arm spinner Dabholkar might feel a tad unlucky as he had two green tops, at Karnail Singh Stadium and Green Park. But what might have tilted the scales in favour of Abdullah is his batting ability, which Mumbai need, given their frequent top-order collapses.

Opener Herwadkar and middle-order batsman Khan have made it to the squad on the back of some brilliant performances in the domestic U-23 tournament. Herwadkar hit 211 against Karnataka and 141 against Delhi in the CK Nayudu Trophy. Khan hit a fifty against Karnataka and 127 against MP in the same tournament. By picking Mangela and Shaikh, the selectors have also indicated that they will keep trying different players in their search for a consistent performer.

Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Nayar, Aditya Tare, Shrideep Mangela, Siddhesh Lad, Akhil Herwadkar, Shreyas Iyer, Sufiyan Shaikh, Sarfaraz Khan, Iqbal Abdullah, Akshay Girap, Shardul Thakur, Wilkin Mota, Badre Alam, Kshemal Waingankar
