A British tourist has been shot dead in the northwestern Ethiopian city of Bahir Dar.

"The tourist was killed at 10:30am local time yesterday," the Ethiopian Government Communication Affairs Office said in a Thursday statement.

According to the statement, the authorities will look into details of the incident when police investigations into the killing are completed.

One suspect, it added, had been detained.

The body of the slain tourist arrived in capital Addis Ababa on Thursday, where it was taken to Menelik II Hospital for an autopsy.

Located 500km northwest of Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar is a popular tourist destination in Ethiopia.

The city of 200,000 people is home to Lake Tana, which is the source of the Blue Nile and the home of several ancient monasteries and churches.

In 2012, five foreign tourists were killed in Ethiopia's northern Afar region.
