A documentary on Yakshagana puppets will be released and a Yaksha Puthali Yatre will be flagged off at the Yakshaputhali Bombemane, Pillikunje, Kasaragod, on Thursday.
President of the Sri Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangha, Kasaragod, K.V. Ramesh, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the Bombemane had been set up on the banks of the Chandragiri at Pillikunje.
The Yakshagana puppet show had a historical significance — Akkamma and her husband Kallakatta Lakshminaranaiah, descendants of Kumbale Parthi Subba, were experts in this art. Late Lakshminaranaiah’s son Venkatakrishnaiah too developed a keen interest in this art form and established the Bombeyata Sangha, Mr. Ramesh said.
Puppet shows and demonstrations by the sangha, which has a history of three and a half decades, have become popular in the coastal region. A documentary — Yakshagana Bombeyata-Yaksha Gombegala Ithihasa — directed by Kriranraj, will be released by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha functionary Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat at 3 p.m. at the Bombemane.
Mr. Ramesh and his brothers, with an aim of establishing a puppet museum at the Bombemane, have organised the Yaksha Puthali Yatre. The procession will be flagged off by Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyur Math at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and entrepreneur B. Vasanth Pai Badiyadka will participate in the inauguration, Mr. Ramesh said.
The Yatre itinerary would be finalised on Thursday, he added.
