THANE: It is a moment of pride for the lake city as three girls from Panchpakhadi and Naupada were among the 73 graduates felicitated by the Mumbai University on Tuesday.
Sandnya Dalvie, a 21-year-old Naupada resident, who was among the top 10 in BSC, 2013-14, was greeted with a loud applause at the convocation ceremony. Dalvie also received a medal for highest score in Statistics.
Uttara Sathe (21), a Pachpakhadi resident, who studied with Dalvie at Ramnarain Ruia College, also secured a place among the top 10.
Representing Thane in the list of toppers in the Commerce stream was 21-year-old Sayali Sahani, a resident of Vishnunagar and a student of Mulund College of Commerce. “It was a very proud moment for all of us and our families. Although we were not given ranks, the congratulatory certificate we were given was enough to make our parents beam with pride,” said Sahani.
All three girls have always excelled in their academics all throughout and have been awarded scholarships during school and college days.
“My mother has always supported me in everything I have wanted to do. She pushed me to pursue anything I was interested in. Besides academics, I have also participated in many public speaking events, professional dramas and I am also training in Kathak,” said Dalvie, who is the only daughter of a single mother. Dalvie is doing her Masters in Science (Statistics) from Mumbai University. She aims to complete her PhD in the subject, before taking up a job.

Sathe believes that she has an aptitude for science because her parents have a background in sceince. Her mom teaches in a college in Dombivli, while her father recently retired from a pharmaceutical company. “Even my sister is doing IT. I have always loved science and my family has guided me throughout,” Sathe said. Currently, Sathe is doing her masters in Science (Statistics) from Pune University as well as pursuing actuarial sciences.
For Sahani, it was her dislike for science that pushed her to take up commerce, which she then fell in love with.
“After I took up commerce, I discovered the world of finance and accounting. I love calculations, the trickier the better. My family, seeing my passion and skill set in the subject, supported me throughout,” Sahani said. She added that she is now pursuing LLB from Thane College but plans to work with a bank or a financial institute as a legal advisor.
