Authorities say a woman has been killed in a crash that took place Tuesday night on a rural road northeast of Calgary.

RCMP says that at about 9:30 p.m., a 2003 Cadillac SUV was eastbound on Highway 564 when it ran a stop sign into the path of an oncoming semi, which was southbound on Highway 9.

As a result, the SUV was struck by the truck.

The driver and lone occupant of the SUV, a 51-year-old woman from Strathmore, was apparently ejected from the vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.

The victim will not been identified.

The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated.

It's unclear at this point if alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

Police would like to remind the public to wear seatbelts and drive safely this holiday season.
