If you want to understand Ugly you must watch Kali-Katha. Kali Katha takes you through the conception of Kali - the little girl whose kidnapping and search forms the story of Ugly.

Kali-katha opens with a couple trapped in a trouble marriage. The husband (Rahul bhatt) blinded by his ambition to become a superstar has turned tone deaf to his wife's (Tejaswini Kolhapure) needs. Egged by a babaji, Rahul wants a child in a hope of reversal of fortunes. His wife Shalini is unwilling. Brainwashed by a friend, Rahul returns home drunk to show Shalini who is the boss. And Kali is conceived. Not a pleasant sight, at all.

Ugly, Anurag Kashyap says originated from his guilt of not giving enough time to his daughter after his divorce from first wife Aarti Bajaj, and the fear of losing her.

"When I started writing it was about me. After my divorce whenever I would meet my daughter she would complain that my work never ended. It triggered off from there. It started from my own guilt and then I included several real-life incidents like that of an IAS officer whose wife filed a case of brutality against him," Anurag says.

"The purpose of the film is to disturb people. I want them to get affected, especially women. Normally, people get repelled after watching a dark film but parents reach out for their children after watching Ugly. That was the desired impact for me," he adds.

The emotional thriller starring Ronit Roy, Tejaswini Kolhapure and Rahul Bhat, unravels the complex interpersonal relationships of various characters in the film.

It garnered rave reviews at various international film festivals including Cannes where it was screened in the Director's Fortnight sidebar in 2013.

Ugly releases this Friday.
