He played in the year’s opener with Denmark alongside Chris Smalling and notched his third England goal in a morale-boosting 3-0 win against Peru in the last friendly before the squad set off for their training camp in Portugal.

Cahill played every minute of England’s World Cup Finals matches in Brazil.

He partnered Phil Jagielka against Italy and Uruguay and Chris Smalling against Costa Rica.

England have won all six of this season’s matches and Cahill has always featured in a defence that has conceded just twice.

Now on 33 caps, he was handed the captain’s armband against Norway and Switzerland in September after designated skipper Wayne Rooney had left the action.

It underlined his status as one of the Three Lions’ most experienced and respected players.
