There are many factors that are taken into consideration by foreign university managements before finalising the admission of a student into their university and Statement of Purpose (SOP) is one among them but most students tend to ignore its importance.

This was pointed out by K.S.R. Anjaneyulu, regional manager, Visu Academy Limited, while speaking at “Education Abroad” seminar organised by The Hindu in association with the academy at Gudlavalleru Engineering College on Tuesday.

Apart from other factors like filing the application early, good GRE score, academic performance, foreign university managements give priority to SOP. They try to ascertain the students’ interest for a particular course, reasons for selecting such course, a student’s contribution to the respective field, etc. All these elements help them in analysing a student’s commitment to pursue higher education in the university, he said.

“University authorities do not stress more on academic performance of a student but a lot of emphasis is laid on SOP. It should be backed with a reference letter from a professor. These things make a lot of difference for a student in securing a seat in top university,” said Mr. Anjaneyulu.

Of late there is a spurt in top rankers from the country in filing applications for admission in different foreign universities. While, those from CSE background opt for mobile technology and telecommunications, EEE students are filing applications for VLSI, robotics, networking courses. Mechanical students are looking for tool design, fluid mechanics courses, he said.

B. Karuna Kumar, Dean of Planning and Monitoring, Gudlavalleru Engineering College, said it was a good platform for students to learn more about different courses and procedures to be followed for seeking admissions in universities abroad.
